The Syndicat national des journalistes (SNJ - English: National Union
of Journalists) can trace its origins to a first meeting on January 9,
1918, where around fifteen journalists, including some writers, met
in Paris. Some of them came from the "Association des journalistes du
mouvement social" (English: Association of Social Movement
Journalists), which spawned the current "Association des journalistes
de l’information sociale, AJIS" (English: Association of Social
Information Journalists) [official website].
The purpose of this gathering was preparatory for a much broader
assembly with the objective of better structuring the profession and,
thereby, to obtain a real status for it. The path chosen: trade
unionism. The new meeting, held on March 10, 1918 in Paris, which, although not
yet named by its current denomination, sought the establishment of the
rules and principles of journalism, known as Deontology,
which is based on the "Charte des devoirs professionnels des
journalistes français" (English: Charter of professional duties for
French journalists) originally published on July 1918, amended in 1938
and revised in its latest version in 2011.
On November 9, 1940 it ceased to exist as all other Unions in the
country by Decree of the Vichy government. It was relaunched in 1946.
In 1981 the SNJ together with other nine organizations, establishes the "Groupe des Dix" (English: Group of Ten), which derives in the
establishment in 1998 of "Union Syndicale 'Solidaires'" (SUD). [sources: official website,

The organization commemorated [source: official website] its centennial in 2018.
